Moneychanger's Shop
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Moneychanger's Shop is a small bank business in Phandalin that offers secured storage to the merchants and traders that come through Phandalin. It is owned and operated by a man by the name of Stephon Winterghast.

The Moneychanger's Shop is located on the north side of the settlement and has been well established since the early days of Phandalin. It carries a good working reputation with it's customers and the people of Phandalin. The bank is established within a well-secured building that is rumored to have magical wards placed all through the structure by a passing wizard years ago to assist in the location remaining secure at all times . . . no one has put that rumor to the test though.

This local Moneychanger's Shop is endorsed by townmaster Harbin Wester and during all business hours one can always find at least two guards stationed inside the Moneychanger's Shop that are locally hired by the owner of the shop. The location offers a fairly straightforward service. Individuals can deposit their hard-earned coin within the secured building and withdraw the same amount at a later date. Information about the amounts of transactions and the bank's clientele are kept secret. The Moneychanger's Shop handling fees are 3% for all coin deposits and storage (no matter the length of time the bank holds a customers coin and valuables) and 4% are non coin valuables stored within the bank.

The Phandalin Moneychanger's Shop does not offer loans to customers. It is strictly a location within Phandalin that exchanges coin and stores valuables for this in need "at a small fee of course". Storge of items has no time limit but the storage fees do adjust with the length of time the items are stored here.

Danley and Sons
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

Danley and Sons is two-story building set in the northside of Phandalin. The inn has six guestrooms upstairs with a communal washroom at the very end of the hall and at this time, all rooms are vacant "for the purpose of our campaign". The rooms are clean and comfortable. Although the hall does not contain windows with curtains, each of the rooms has a window. Each room has a comfortable bed, many covers & blankets, a wash stand, chamber pot, towel, pegs for garments, and several chairs and stools.

Danley and Sons is a sparsely attended cheap and ordinary looking inn. It does enough business to keep its doors open but not much more. It has its regular customers, mostly friends or friends of friends of the family. Despite being in a struggling community, Danley and Sons occasionally hosts traveling minstrels for entertainment. Danley is an industrious miner who sought to reopen ore production in Phandalin several years ago.

Danley is a man "in his mid 40's" who is the proprietor of the Danley and Sons, that rents out the rooms and seems to manage the inn and his son named Talbet usually works in the back either cooking or washing dishes . He is polite and smiles often to customers, but one can tell he does not tolerate visitors who do not respect the rules of his establishment. He is friendly enough "for the most part" and is always welcoming to those visiting. A redheaded barmaid named Adelaine, rushes from table to table taking orders and going to and from the kitchen in the back to get meals for customers.

Danley is the proprietor of the Danley and Sons. Danley is a human man with redish hair and a nervous demeanor. He has a tendency to unconsciously rub his hands together when stressed. Like the Stonehill Inn, Danley and Sons also has a cat that stays in the Inn. This cat however is not a stray, it belongs to Danley and is named Muffin "that being the cats favorite food". He keeps his cat in the Inn with hopes that he might help bring in a few more customers.

The establishment is a nondescript everyday Inn one might find in any small village. The main floor in the inn consists mostly of open area filled with small round tables with chairs and a medium sized bar located along the left side on the main floor as you enter the establishment.

Candles have been place throughout the dining area which keep the bottom floor well lit. Bar stools have been placed at the bar itself. The inn is clean and very well maintained, you can tell Nana takes great pride in her business. At most times during the day, a young red headed girl can be seen waiting tables occassionally tripping over the local feline that seems to live within these walls.

Prices at the Danley and Sons Inn are reasonable and the meals that are prepared here are decent enough. Venison, mutton, stuffed trout, roasted goose, pork, fried sausages, kidney pie, stuffed pheasant and boiled crayfish are just a few of the foods which are served here. The inn is not a bad establishment, but due to the lack of business the establishment has gone down over the recent years but remains a clean and welcoming place to eat meals.

Meals are served on pottery or pewter or copper services according to the customers order. Various leather jacks, pottery mugs, wooden tankards, pewter steins, glass flagons, crystal goblets, or silver chalices are used for the beverages. The locally brewed ale and beer is supplemented by other various local brews, mead and brandy are also served at the inn..

Edermath Orchard
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

Edermath Orchard is an apple orchard just outside of Phandalin. The orchard is located on the northwest side of the settlement, and is a dominant landmark for anyone arriving into Phandalin from the road. The trees surrounded a small group of buildings in which the orchard's business took place, and the house of the owner, Daran Edermath, is nearby.

The orchard operated year-round, and thus always smelled strongly of apples. In the warmer months, the orchard produced fresh fruit and juice, while in the winter, fruit is processed into cider and other products. The orchard counted both visiting merchants and local food and drink establishments as customers.

Daran Edermath (the current caretaker of the Orchard) is a retired adventurer who lives in a tidy little cottage beside an apple orchard. A fit, silverhaired half-elf well over a hundred years old, Daran is a fighter who serves as protector of the region around Phandalin "appointed by the townmaster" for many years in and around the settlement. Upon retiring, he remained in the region and relocated to Phandalin where he started his orchard.

Daran is also still a reserve member of the Harkenwold miltia "but only during times of conflict", that strives to protect others from the depredations of evildoers. The half elf is always vigilant, ready to smite evil, enforce justice, and enact retribution against any who try to subjugate or harm others. Though he is no longer active in the militia, he keeps an eye on happenings around Phandalin. He is happy to trade news with fellow adventurers, especially those who appear to hold to these virtues.

Daran Edermath currently lives in a small cottage on the southern side of his orchard. When not attened his trees he can usually either be found here or in the Stonehill Inn in Phandalin.

Tresendar Manor
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

Tresendar Manor is one of the largest buildings in the Phandalin "actually just outside of Phandalin". It was first inhabited by the Tresendar family, but after its abandonment, it now serves as a base for the Redbrands, as well as bugbears, goblins, and other undesirables.

The manor is located at the end of the main northern trail leaving Phandalin, just beyond the Sleeping Giant tavern. The path leading up to the manor is curvy and elevated by one hill on top of another.

Ruined from the outside, the manor still stands, but clearly in a poor, unmaintained state. It appears much more like a keep than a simple place of dwelling, and is surrounded by a handful of trees and shrubs. The floors are made of flagstone and the walls are well-made stone blocks.

The manor contains several rooms, and a stone staircase that leads to a large cellar, which was originally used to store food and drink. There is also a crypt that was used as a place of rest for family members who had passed away in the past. Several oil lamps light up each room. The doors are made of wood and the handles of iron.

Many years ago, orcs swarmed the caverns below the manor. Though many of the orcs were fought off, Aldith Tresendar was eventually slain, and his enchanted longsword, Talon, was lost to the ages.

Several years ago, a group of ruffians, moved in and occupied the manor. Although the uppermost rooms of the manor were unusable (such as the kitchen) after its abandonment, the basement garnered much usage by these bandits. As such, many additions were added to the cellar, such as barracks and workshops.

Two years ago, Thel Dendrar, the local woodcarver, stood up to the group that occupied the manor. He was slain and fed to a nothic "a monstrous creature with terrible talons and a single great eye", while his family was captured and thrown into the slave pit. Later, Carp Alderleaf, a lad from Phandalin, managed to locate the secret entrance to the base via a tunnel.

Lionshield Coster
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Lionshield Coster, also called the Lionshields, is a merchant company based out of the city of Fallcrest, that operates throughout the vale.

The merchant company's symbol is an image of a lion's head placed upon a wooden or metal shield. In some instances the lion is colored blue, while in others it is emblazoned over a blue background.

This merchant company is able to ship finished goods, such as supplies of armor and weapons, to small settlements and towns all throughout Nentir Vale and beyond.

One such settlement is Phandalin near the East Way and the Dawnforge Mountains. The settlements trading post is overseen by Linene Graywind, a sharp-tongued human woman in her mid thirties. The organization also has a trading post in Winterhaven called the Lion's Share, run by Darthag Ulgar.

It is a modest building. Above the front door is a weathered wooden sign in the shape of a shield on which is painted a blue lion. Armor and weapons are stored in a back room to keep them out of the hands of any who might wish harm upon the people of Phandalin. The store serves as an outpost and delivery point for caravans run by the Lionshield Coster, and specializes mostly in providing the people of Phandalin with finished goods, horses, armor, weapons, and other adventuring equipment. It is perhaps the only place in the settlement where adventurers can sell valuable treasures for reasonable prices, although the rates were much lower than in Fallcrest or Winterhaven.

During the Year of 103AE, deliveries to the Phandalin Lionshield Coster are frequently attacked by bandits, including the Cragmaw tribe. At least one caravan from Fallcrest was completely lost, with all of its goods being stolen. The master of the trading post is Linene Graywind, who is assisted by her daughter, Minghee Graywind. They live on-site, on the second floor in a small apartment.

Phandalin Patisserie Shoppe
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Phandalin Patisserie Shoppe is the bakery and home of Tobin Amberfoot, a young, brown haired Halfling who opened this Patisserie Shoppe some 2 years ago after traveling from Fallcrest. Tobin left Fallcrest to find a smaller community to tend to with his baked goods. He wanted to have a more personal feel with his customers and in a big city like Fallcrest, this was impossible to do. When seen working in his shoppe, he will be seen carrying several of his various cookbooks, pouring over new recipes. This patisserie shoppe is all Tobin has so he puts fourth a serious effort to make his customers happy.

The shop stands next to the Countryside Inn which gives this establishment a lot of business. The building is a small bakery, and surprisingly well stocked for a settlement of this small size, with the front of the shop facing the main street that goes through the center of Byroden. It has a small cellar for storing supplies, with the ground floor given over to the business and upper floor used as the Tobin's home.

The ground floor has two main sections. The front of the building is the store and is open to the public. Here, a counter ringed the room with large cabinets displaying the day's wares; there is also a bread bin. A corridor leads to the back of the building. The cellar of the building is used for storage, holding ingredients. At the rear was the kitchen and preparation area, with a large oven, cooling racks, and work bench. He has his own personal oven sent to Phandalin to his new shop . . . he is rather fond of that particular oven, and he believes his oven is just as good as this so called "magical" oven in Nenlast.

The bakery has a small dining room at the front of the shop. Upstairs is a small living area, furnished with two couches, rug, and bookcase with a small bedroon in the back. Off of it is a bathroom with bathtub. The shop as a whole is very cosy and confortable and it very popular with the residents of Phandalin. At times the shop has been known to have customers from outside Phandalin . . . the Phandalin Patisserie Shoppe is known throughout Nentir Vale.

Townmaster's Office
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

This small building is the Townmaster's office in Phandalin, the center of government in Phandalin which is where one might find Townmaster Harbin Wester during the day time hours when he is not out and about the settlement. This location is also the public meeting place for any important meeting that requires the townmaster's attention. The Townmaster's office is located in the center of Phandalin.

The structure is a small single story building made of good quality stone and wood. The roof is made of wood with a bell tower rising from the back of the building. A noticeboard near the front door displays bulletins and information for residents and newcomers to Phandalin, some are even jobs offering rewards for certain tasks.

The office is used for multiple purposes but is mainly used for meetings and such with a sturdy oak table with chairs seated around it. A large hearth warms the entire office during the colder months of the year. The townmaster will meet here monthly with most of the prominent business owners in Ravenvale to discuss matters of importance. A large designer rug lay across most of the center of the room with well-made furniture and such spread across the room.

All rewards for completed jobs are paid out of the Townmaster's office by the Townmaster himself. Outsiders will never gain access to the office without first getting permission. The second floor is mainly used as the lord Townmaster's home. A small hearth is in the back of the room which is independent from the one downstairs. The upstairs room is a simple room, with only the basic necessities. Harbin Wester spends very little time here except for getting needed sleep.

Shrine of Luck
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The small shrine islocated in the center of Phandalin to the north of the Stonehill Inn, it was the original shrine to Avandra before the larger, more popular shrine was built. It is made of a set of stones from the neighboring ruins. It is dedicated to Avandra, The Changebringer.

The shrine is in the care of a scholarly acolyte named Sister Garaele, a zealous young elf who despairs of ever ridding Phandalin of the Redbrands. Sister Garaele is a member of a small group of people who call themselves the Guardians, a scattered network of adventurers and spies who advocate equality and covertly oppose the abuse of power. The Guardians gather information throughout the land to thwart tyrants and any leader, government, or group that grows too strong. They aid the weak, the poor, and the oppressed. Sister Garaele regularly reports to her superiors on events in and around Phandalin.

Phandalin Miner's Exchange

Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Miner's Exchange is a trading post and guildhall in Phandalin that purchases materials from local miners.

Location
The exchange is located to the southwest of Phandalin, and directly east of a trail used by the local miners. It is marked by a sign bearing an image of two crossed pickaxes over a lump of gold.

Atmosphere
A lot of the villagers spend their time here, particularly those that have spent most of the working day around the countryside. All business is conducted on the first floor of the building.

Services
The company purchases quantities of ore and gems from the miners of Phandalin. It is also is the best place to purchase carts and wagons in Phandalin.

It further functions as a records office, which registeres claims to specific parts of the land, such as valleys, streams, and excavations.

History
The business is headed by Halia Thornton, a Myriad agent. Although the local brigands, known as the Redbrands, hassles almost all the businesses in Phandalin, they do not even attempt to ruin trade for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange.

The Miner's Exchange suffered from financial difficulties throughout the early last year because the flow of resources from the mines was irregular. It would sometimes go for months with any revenue.

Stonehill Inn
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Stonehill Inn, a quaint Inn that is said to be one of the oldest structures in this small community and is one of the largest buildings in Phandalin. Newly built in 102AE, the inn is a large, two-story building and is made of stone trimmed with wood. The Inn has an aged look and feel to it but seems well put together and very well maintained. Most of the clientele have plenty of coin to spend . . . "mostly being travelers and adventurers passing through the region". The Stonehill Inn might be a small secluded Inn nestled in the middle of Phandalin but it is still an important location for this small settlement. On any given night, you might find a small group of locals sitting around, drinking a pint and discussing the days events with each other.

The villagers of Phandalin, from miners to farmers, enjoy relaxing in the common room of the inn, which has become a good place to hear local gossip and stories. The inn is kept neat and clean, and is a generally pleasant place to visit.

It features a Well-Informed Barmaid named Elsa and a hearth to warm your spirits. The settlement might be small, where as larger towns and cities have more fancy establishments, but the Stonehill Inns ale casks are always full! This quaint establishment is owned and operated by a young man that everyone calls Toby, his real name is Toblen Stonehill, his wife Trilena Stonehill helps him operate the establishment along with the help of his son, Pip Stonehill. Toblen has lived in Phandalin his entire life and knows everyone who lives here by their first name. He is very well liked and respected and believes it is his duty to keep the folk of Phandalin well fed.

The establishment seems to have a live in cat that is always here, his name is Buddy. Toby says the cat got in one day so he fed him some scraps and the cat never left so he just lets him stay. Buddy is a most annoying kitty, constantly jumping up on tables while customers are trying to eat. He is a friendly cat and most regulars are just used to him as being part of the dining experience at the Stonehill Inn.

No new customer is turned away as long as they have the money for their drinks and meals. Meals are mostly of standard prices, and the food and drink are well worth the price increase. The guest rooms are rather priced at a reasonable price and are well worth the price. As said before, this establishment is rather small, only having five rooms for rent upstairs but the overall structure is very well maintain and is a welcome sight to those coming in off the long roads. The main floor in the inn consists mostly of open area filled with tables and chairs and a well stocked bar located on the side of the room as you enter the tavern. Bar stools have been placed around the bar itself. The inn is clean and very well maintained, you can tell the owners take great pride in this establishment. General gossip is common within these walls "with the many travelers visiting this location all having tales to share".

Prices at the Stonehill Inn are of the standard rate and the food prepared here is excellent. Choice venison, mutton, poached salmon, trout stuffed with specially prepared mixtures, goose roasted to a golden brown, pork, steaming sausages, steak and kidney pie with mushrooms or truffles, squab stuffed pheasant and boiled crayfish in drawn butter are just a few of the delights which are served here. Most Patrons include wealthy traveling merchants, traveling nobles, and citizens of Phandalin.

Meals are served on pottery or pewter or copper services according to the customers order. Various leather jacks, pottery mugs, wooden tankards, pewter steins, glass flagons, crystal goblets, or silver chalices are used for the beverages. The locally brewed ale and beer is supplemented by brews from other places, and wine, mead and brandy from all over the region make their way to the boards of the Stonehill Inn.

Visitors will notice standing behind the bar (during most business hours) - the barkeep, known as Elsa, a young woman, with shoulder length brown hair "usually in a ponytail" and very pleasing to the eyes.

The Old Barrow
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Old Barrow or as most know it as the "Barrowmaze" dominates the hightopped hills south of the settlement of Nenlast. The region is a vast fetid bog south of Lake Nen from which it feeds off of. Within these marshy hills, an obscuring fog hangs heavily on the landscape and easily disorients travelers.

At dusk the fog is nearly impenetrable and the moon casts an eerie glow across the soggy hills. The air feels thick and hard to breath. The marsh smells of rot and decay. The ground of the Barrowmoor is soft and footprints quickly fill with dark peat-coloured water.

The hills are difficult to navigate due to the tangled and near impenetrable mass of decaying trees, weeds that stand seven feet high, knotted vines, and deep pools of black swamp water.

The hills are an unnervingly silent place. Occasionally the deep croak of a bullfrog can be heard before it plops into the water, or perhaps the distant caw of a raven, but otherwise the hills is strangely quiet.

Stories abound about the monsters and inhabitants of the Barrowmoor. A tribe of froglings is known to exist somewhere in the central eastern portion of the marsh. These small, frog-like humanoids often emerge from the moor to attack caravans travelling back and forth along the trade routes to from Nenlast to Hammerfast and and even as far as Fallcrest.

Locals also tell stories of creatures flying above the fog covered hills and dark fell creatures lurking throughout the region around the Barrows. Adventuerers brave enough to journey across the dark shrouded region also tell tales of lizardmen conducting strange rituals around ancient standing stones in the southern portion of the hills.

For much of the year the Barrowmoor is near impenetrable. During the fall, winter, and early spring the region is simply too soggy and water-covered to traverse. The hills lie in a lowland region which takes on a lot of water from Lake Nen.

Over the last two seasons, the populations of Nenlast have grown with adventurers in the summer months and adventuers have also set out from Fiveleague House in search of ancient treasures and magic.

Most of the heroes who went into this region have not been heard from again. The few who do return are changed and speak of dark evils lurking in the foggy region. Most of these adventuers that do return warn others that this region is best left alone.

Kobold Hall
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax
Like Kalton Manor, the wreck now known locally as Kobold Hall was the estate of a minor lord who came to Nentir Vale to establish his own residence. Ruined during the Bloodspear War, the old castle has been abandoned for almost a century and the lord's name and glories he earned are long forgotten. Since then kobold tribes from the Cloak Wood now lurk in the catacombs beneath the ruins. The ruined manor, a crumbling estate currently overlooks the old King's Road.

The Cloak Wood has started to overrun the grounds, with trees growing in the midst of abandoned gardens and courtyards. The tribes squabble with each other, raid surrounding settlements, and attack caravans on the old King’s Road. Lately, the kobolds have become more aggressive. The Skull Kicker tribe has taken over or driven off the rival tribes. Recently, the Skull Kickers stole a wagon loaded with valuable cargo from a caravan on the King’s Road.

Barthen's Provisions
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

This store is located on the south side of Phandalin. It is the first shop that would be seen when entering the settlement from the East Way. Virtually every sort of saleable goods are sold here. Rare and/or unusual items might be obtained at a price and in time (and will often be spurious or faulty). Magical items are NOT sold here ever!

The establishment seems to always be well stocked. The store itself is medium sized to large with a single floor but it does have many alchoves along the upper walls that are accessed with ladders. Barthen's Provisions is owned and operated by Elmar Barthen.

Barthen's Provisions acts basically as a general store, and is open from dawn until dusk. It sells low-cost trade wares, such as adventuring gear, as well as rations and other simple goods, and is perhaps the only place in the region that carries specialty skull-shaped butter from Butterskull Ranch.

Barthen's Provisions also serves as a trading hub. Clerks Ander and Thistle unload and load carts of goods and resources that come into, or go out of Phandalin via wagon. About Our Game Rules
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

I wanted to write up an article describing the game rules we will be using. We are using a "modified" Old-School Essentials system with a "lot" of AD&D rules added to it and a small few 5th edition house rules . . . all of which I will explain below.

The main thing we will be using from Old-School Essentials are the class/race system. With this system you have core classes and racial classes but no actual choosable races. Core classes are classes like Fighter, Thief, Cleric and others. The racial classes are classes like Elf, Dwarf and Halfling to name a few. Any core class that is chosen will automatically be human as a race and any racial class that is chosen will be "that race", for example if the Elf class is chosen then the race will also be Elf.

All races will not have any racial bonus like you have in AD&D and other editions. I know it sounds confusing but once you get a graasp of it then it is actually rather simple to understand. Here at this link are the available classes we currently have in our games.

All spells, magical items and such will come from AD&D. All human classes will have level caps raised to 18 while non racial classes will be raised by 4 based off of the caps in Old-School Essentials. The reasoning behind us using Old-School Essentials classes but using most of the AD&D rules is simple, I want to make things challenging for my players.

Old-School Essentials classes are not anywhere near as powerful as new edition classes, even AD&D classes so players can't simply have characters charge in and run through all the enemies that they face. We do plan to use a few 5th edition rules as house rules . . . mainly Advantage/disadvantage and death saves. More 5th edition house rules may be added later but at this time I don't see any I want to use.

The goal is to combine two sets of rules but keep things as classic as possible. This is a brand new "modified" system that I came up with that has never been tested. I am sure we will encounter bugs that will need to be ironed out and fixed but overall I think I have it pretty well hammered out.

Fallcrest Tenements
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax
This large tenement structure features apartments for the city residents who do not own farms or who work in the businesses within the walls who do not have a permanent residence. Several families also live in the homes on the east side of the city. Most of the residents who live outside the walls are farmers and crafters who bring their wares to the Market Square to sell or trade.

The tenements belong to the Fallcrest government, they are not independently owned and operated by any individual. The weekly rent starting at 10sp/week is sent to the office of Lord Warden Faren Markelhay and is then used to maintain structures within Fallcrest, pay the militia and other things that keep this settlement flourishing. Rent is mostly dependent on what profession the person(s) is/are. People that have higher incomes will be rented to for an elevated rent fee (in other words, adventurers will be able to pay a lot more since they are usually "well off"). It does however have an individual that administers the weekly funds, a kindly woman by the name of Marita Olven. She runs a nearby office during the day that handles all business for the tenements.

Moon Tower
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

Named for the silver crescent moon painted on the door, Moon Tower is where Nenlast's few mages congregate. Owned by an old mage by the name of Cromlen, Moon Tower is a combination magic shop and residence.

While Cromlen's adventuring days have slowed down drastically in the last decade or so, rumors abound of arcane secrets and trinkets held within the tower. Many say this mage is more than he seems.

It is a lone tower, standing some 70 feet (21 meters) high with a spired top located just outside of Nenlast. It has a hard oak wooden door door, and it had three large windows on the top level.

The tower is made out of smooth stone, with a single window in the front of the tower itself and three windows on the top floor. From the outside, the structure appears to be a four-story stone tower, but inside, there are at least a half dozen more levels, and some of these can only be reached by magical means. Everything in the tower connects to the central stairwell, although magical passwords were required to transport to certain areas of this tower. The four levels visible from the outside were all freely accessible via simply using the stairs.

The tower had 70 ft ceilings. The tower was very well lit with much of the tower using wall-mounted lanterns to provide additional light. The first floor was mainly a lunge area, with comfortable chairs and such for visitors to sit in. The second floor serves as mostly a storage area of vials, tomes and such . . . general items a wizard would need for his research. The third floor is used by Cromlen as his working and living areas. This floor includes an alchemy laboratory and a library

The fourth floor was entirely dedicated to Cromlen's living quarters. This level contained mostly items for comfort such as a bed, a couple of comfortable chairs, tables and chests and a large desk and chair.

Cromlen the Sorcerer is a powerful wizard that resides in Nenlast within Nentir Vale, prefering the simplicity of living in a smaller settlement where he is least bothered by others and can live a life of quiet solitude. Unofficially he is retired, unofficially . . . it's none of your concern "as he would say". Cromlen's most notable feature is his pircing blue eyes which seem to be able to see things others cannot, which distinguished him since his youth, throughout the years he spent most of his time studying the arcane arts. He has a shock of stark white hair in his youth, and has maintained a beard through most of his years that eventually also has went pure white in his old age. As mentioned before, Cromlen has vibrant blue eyes set under big bushy eyebrows that turned blue-gray later in life.

In his later years, the elderly Cromlen has begun to show his age, with his gruff voice and weathered features, but remaines alert. He prefers to wear robes, like black or dark blue robes.

While Cromlen is capable of taking on almost any appearance imaginable, even that of a beholder he once slew, he often prefers to travel in a less conspicuous manner, often utilizing invisibility and shapechange spells. Depending on the circumstances, Cromlen can be as equally serious, fearsome, or arrogant, while just as often demonstrating exceptional charm, cleverness, and good-natured humor.

At all times he is said to be wholly fearless and entirely forthright with others. Cromlen is a natural raconteur and actor, and can take on the role of father figure, a wily trickster, an immoral rake, or any other clichéd role that serves his needs at the time, or else on a whim to elicit a reaction from others. Most often Cromlen chooses to only reveal the full range of his character to his close friends and companions.

Cromlen extols the virtues of tolerance, peace, and freedom from oppression. He truly cherishes the wonder and beauty of the natural world. While Cromlen grew up hating magic, especially those that wielded it for their own selfish ends, he garnered a profound appreciation for the Power and the Art during his studies. According to Cromlen, mages should further their studies to best understand how to avoid using the arcane power they had at their disposal.

One of Cromlen's personality quirks was that he snored loudly while sleeping. He was considerate enough to magically mute himself during sleep if it would disturb his friends. The popular word amongst those who know him however is Cromlen did not actually need to sleep, but this has not been made factual. Sarsauce fowl, a baked fowl dish, was one of Cromlen's favorite foods found in the realms, second only to fire-seared barbfin or smoked salmon.

Before he devoted his life to his wizardly studies, the young Cromlen possessed the innate ability to heal himself and detect magical auras at will. Cromlen is exceptionally intelligent—a gift that was bolstered by multiple castings of the wish spell, "which makes once wonder just how powerful this wizard really is". He is also blessed with an eidetic memory, that allows him to recall information from years past in quite an impressive manner.

Cromlen considers his exceptional memory as something of a curse. He can't help but remember the death of every friend and loved one, along with every tragedy he could not prevent over the thousand-plus years of his life.

Marita's Bookshop
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax
This bookshop is located in the settlement of Nenlast in Nentir Vale, on the western end of the settlement. It is the only bookseller in town, and is run by Marita Moonstone, a very polite and courteous young lady. Marita has ran this bookshop for the last two years, since her late husband was killed during an orc raid on the settlement.

Among these, Marita dealt specially in maps, records, and information concerned with exploration of the vale, such as trails, uncommon and secret routes, and treasure tales. She also has a wide selection of simple fantasy books for light reading as well.

Maps the are slightly detailed or scraps of writing with information sold at Marita's Bookshop has a cost of 100 gp and sometimes more, while more detailed and accurate maps and treasure maps could cost twice as much and sometimes more, depending on what information these items hed. However, Marita purchases such things from adventures for far less - "I mean, she has to make money somehow right"?

About Our Nerath Campaign Setting
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

This is just me rambling on about what I want to do with this setting and my campaign in my own words, things that I want to do with my Nentir Vale and adventures I plan to add into this region so humor me lol. It should be a lot of fun.

You folks have no idea how annoying it has been for me trying to decide which setting to make my own and yea I am one of the DMs that prefers to remain in a single setting so I can build a story behind the players characters and things that change with the characters interactions. I've been torn between Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Ravenloft: Sithicus Domain and a cvouple of smaller regions that are classicifed as settings - such as Dolmenwood, the Wild Lands and a couple more other settings but in the end I went with Nerath, specifically Nentir Vale.

I love the history and lore of the Nentir Vale region and how it was affected by the Nerathi war and the aftermath of with the Empire of Nerath collapsing and how it affgected the rest of the world . . . specifically Nentir Vale. I like how this setting has a dark, sinister feel to him, it kind of feels like a post apocalyptic setting with the fallout from the great war.

With Nentir Vale being a 4th edition D&D Point of Light, I like it even more. Don't know what a Point of Light is? Let me drop this quote for you then . . .

4th edition D&D introduced a new world (eventually called Nerath) and a default starting area called Nentir Vale. The premise of a points of light setting is that the world is fallen; civilized people now live in small, isolated settlements (the points of light) scattered across a dark and dangerous world.

Basically, the world is in a state of rebuilding after the fallout from the great war. I plan to focus my setting on Nentir Vale. I believe this region has enough adventure packed into it to keep my campaign going for many years.

Nentir Vale is a setting where you'll find small, isolated “points of light” surrounded by the darkness of the untamed wild. Travel between communities is dangerous with bandits, vicious humanoids, and monsters of all kinds in control of the darkness between settled areas.

Now, lets talk about my plans for Nentir Vale and how I was to run it as an isolated setting. My plan is to just keep my focus on Nentir Vale, keeping my players here indefinitely. I honestly think this region has enough content in it that I will never run out of things to run for my players to keep them busy for a long time. I also can add in adventures in the Underdark which should be easy enough with the Cloakwood have an Underdark theme. We also have the Shadowfell to sprinkle in along with the Feywild and even Ravenloft.

What I like most about making Nentir Vale my entire campaign setting is, it will be easy for the players characters to make a difference here. Players characters can be true heroes of the vale and I am sure they will enjoy that title being given to them as the save settlements from the encroaching darkness.

The Sleeping Giant
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

A rundown, ramshackle, and dangerous watering hole located on the eastern edge of Phandalin. Most of the time, ruffians can be seen loitering around the front of the establishment. It is known for being frequented by a bandit group known as the Redbrands. It is operated by a surly female dwarf named Grista Kettlecopp.

Due to the shady individuals supporting this inn, the townmaster Harbin Wester has left this inn operating, not that he had the power to shut it down - mainly the Redbrands see to that . . . most folk of Phandalin simply turn a blind eye to this run down establishment.

The building is located at the eastern end of main street, which ends at Tresendar Manor. It is marked as a tavern by a sign depicting a prone giant and by its porch, which has several empty barrels of ale on display.

The Sleeping Giant is owned by a dwarf named Grista Kettlecopp, whose rude demeanor reflects the quality (or lack thereof) of the pub itself. It is the favored watering hole for cruder folk, and caters mostly to dwarf and human miners and ruffians. The bar is poorly maintained, and townsfolk are known to dissuade visitors from going there.

The main taproom is smokey and dirty. There is hay strewn across the room, and by the look of it has not been changed for a while: all sorts of stains and discolorations mark the floor. Broken-down tables and benches barely hold together. The walls are covered with hunting trophies, countless antlers, and a few stuffed heads, some of them well past their best. A moth-eaten head of a bear hands from the wall behind the rustic bar. It does have a upper level to the main floor with more tables.

There are only another two rooms in the dive:

- a backroom that serves as Grista's 'quarters': the room is as dirty and unkempt as the taproom itself. A small single bed is tucked in a corner, a desk full of papers and empty bottles sits beside the small fireplace. It is dark, dingy, and smells really bad.

- the other room is a barn with old straw and empty stalls. The beer barrels are kept in a small cellar underground - there is a large trap door visible in the first stall on the right-hand side. Customers who have passed out are dragged there by Seekill to finish off the night.

House Rules
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

1. Stats Rolling: This isn't a so called House Rule as one might know it, but every group has there own ways of rolling character stats. Some roll 3 six sided and keep whats rolled, some roll 4 six sided and reroll all ones. Our rule we use is we roll 4 six sided (6 times), reroll all 1's, and drop the lowest roll, keeping the 3 highest 6 sided dice for that stats. Yea it kills sucky stats, but we believe that players will play better (and enjoy the characters more) if the character does not "suck" and we have not had problems with characters getting a set of "GOD STATS". Sure every now and then someone gets a higher than normal set of stats but this is not happening often with us.

2. Level One Hit Points: We give all level 1 characters max hitpoints. This is done "only" for level One. This gives the characters a fighting chance, especially the Wizard who could easily have 1-2 hit points. Yea I know, it is babying them at level 1. We try to make sure our players have a good time and not worry about tripping and taking lethal damage from a pebble. From level Two and higher, hit points are rolled normal.

3. Clerics & Level One Spells: In Old-School Essentials, Clerics do not normally start out with an opening spell at level One which I find a bit harsh so we have house ruled in that Clerics will gain one level One spell at level One. Level two and beyond the Cleric follows the spell chart as it is written.

4. Healing Bonus: Clerics add their level to healing spells. For example - a normal Cure Light Wounds spell will heal 1d6 +1 points. If the Cleric is 5th level then they will heal for 1d6 +1 (+5 for level).

5. Spellcasting: All spells used by Wizard classes and Cleric classes will be from the Old-School Essentials books unless it is a spell from AD&D. Any spell not listed in the Old-School Essentials books will be ran as is from with the AD&D Players Handbook or Unearthed Arcana books. A time may come where a spell from 2nd edition is inserted into our games and if this happens, players characters will simply add this to the available spells able to be used.

6. Playable Classes & Races: We will be using a class based system from Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy. Every class we use can be found at this link & the races that we use can be found at this link. If you happen to notice any errors, please let us know.

Queen Stravalla's Tower
The Nerath Campaign & The Nerath Timeline
The current year for our Nerath campaign is set during the year 103AE.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

Just south of Mount Starris, a valley cuts a scar-like line through the Dawnforge Mountains. Despite the summer heat or the bitter winter cold, a forest forever thick and lush fills this valley. Travelers smell Summerdown Valley long before they see it, as the blooming flowers cast a perfume on the wind. Despite its appearance, the valley is a place of grave danger.

A powerful hag, Queen Stravalla of Winter’s Mourning, dwells within this place. In her tower, she surveys the verdant garden that is her realm. Trolls, werewolves, and murderous fey heed her beck and call, and within the ever-verdant forest shamble the animated corpses of those who dared enter her realm. Clad in rusted armor and covered with sickly sweet orchids that grow from their decaying flesh, these sentinels make quick work of those who blunder into Summerdown Valley.

Minions of Queen Stravalla, trolls, werewolves and other fell creatures of Summerdown Valley venture far and wide in search of fresh victims and treasure for their queen. In addition to the groups just mentioned, other monsters common to the region include ankhegs, blood hawks, dire boars, cave bears, hippogriffs, harpies, manticores, owlbears, gray wolves, and wyverns. The valley and surrounding area are infested with trolls, hill giants, ogres, gnolls, goblins, and orcs, making trveling in the region very dangerous. In the aftermath of the Bloodspear War, these monsters have grown bolder and more aggressive. A number of marauding gangs of humans, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes, scour the peaks as well, in search of folk to rob and terrorize.

Several bands of goliaths range throughout the mountains as well. Most of the time these goliaths wander above the tree line to keep clear of monsters and travelers. Once a year, though, they engage in a great race across the mountains. A non-goliath that completes the race becomes an honorary member of one of the clans.

These mountains also hide dragons—foremost among them the three-headed monstrosity that calls herself Calastryx. The dragon is slumbering, still affected by a curse placed on her centuries ago, but fears are growing stronger that her reemergence is near. Like Vestapalk far to the west, she too has a tribe of kobolds that are fanatically subservient to her. The Emberdark kobolds can hardly wait till Calastryx wakes up, and they actively work to make that happen.

Apart from the dangers of bandits and monsters, the rough terrain, perilous slopes, and bitter cold of the mountains present equally deadly threats.
