The decision to "settle" on the Nentir Vale campaign setting was not an easy one, not that this is a bad campaign setting, hell . . . if anything it is the most "interesting and odd" campaign setting from every setting I have ever played in. The pantheon is Immortals instead of gods, drow elves do not exist here, but we have shadow elves instead. It has a super wacky mix of kingdoms/nations and each of them are totally different than the others.
The Nentir Vale setting is "meant" to be ran using Old-School Essentials rules even though it is a 4th edition campaign setting, "in my opinion of course". It is actually the default campaign setting for the Basic/Expert D&D systems. It is one of the oldest settings for the game. For me, this setting has that World of greyhawk feel to it. If ever we were to want to play in a pure classic D&D setting, the setting of Nentir Vale would be it.What I would like to do is pull in new players or "subscribers of our Youtube channel " to fill the group if we don't fill it with local players. The plan is to have a group with four players and then fire this thing up soon after. We will be looking for players that actually are motived to play the game and can be counted on to remain in contact with each other as well as the DM. I understand playing D&D online is not as fun as playing around the table but I'll make it as fun for my players as possible. Playing D&D online takes so much more work on the DMs part than a live game because you have to do a lot more to keep the players excited about playing the game online than you would with playing around a table.
What I want to do for my players in this upcoming campaign is just give them something kind of open ended . . . a campaign setting that they can just explore in a sort of sandbox style campaign. Sure, I will give my player little nudges at times to guide them in the proper direction but I do not plan to railroad them. I want to focus the campaign out of the settlement of Threshold in a way that over time the players characters will become heroes of the region which will over time have more of an impact on the Grand Duchy of Karameikos.
The thing is, with me being out of the game for close to twenty years, this is bound to start off a little rusty but I have never ran these adventures before and the excitement has started to kick in for me. Once we finish this adventure I "should" have something else lined up for the party to continue on with but at this very moment I have not planned that far ahead. I will wait and see how my players do and then decide what is next from that point . . . hell, I can run virtually any adventure I want into this setting, I am sure I will get it figured out before we start our first adventure. We will be using a modified Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy for our core set of rules. We considered using Advanced Dungeons & Dragons but the more I read on Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy the more I fell in back love with this game system. We will also have a few house rules added to our system of rules but not a lot. I think most of these house rules will be more about quality of life rules than anything. I have also changed up the adventure since my first one was suited more for my former players but this time I will be focusing on an adventure that I think players will enjoy playing in as well as me DMing it for my players. All of our game sessions will be locally recorded and then once we finish each session I will go back and do a lot of editing to give it a more ambience with sound effects, background ambience music and other things.
I am more excited about this campaign than you know. I do know this will be a lot of work especially on my part but overall I think the entire experience will be enjoyable for myself as well as my future players. Stay tuned in to our news section for future news and updates.
